About me

me in 2010

Early years:

Growing up in Glasgow at a time of strikes, smog from coal fires, flares and platform boots (thankfully I was too young to wear them), but Glasgow  was also a place for adventure with a whole network of abandoned train stations and tunnels underneath the city to explore.Glasgow was far away from all the bad things happening in the world, a place full of genuine people

Rockstar years:

Leaving Glasgow at 17 a week after completing my school exams, changing my accent, living in Amsterdam which was then the place in Europe for an under-25 to live. Spending months in Lisbon, a place I at times hated but mostly loved. Moving to New York City, the intersections of East 48th Street & Second Avenue and in Greenwich Village at Thompson & Bleeker special places for me. New York City does sleep, just walk through Manhattan at 5am as I did with my friends many many times. Missing Europe and moving to Barcelona, yet more walking at 5am with my friends, this time on Las Ramblas and then later in London on Old Compton Street.

Settling down:

Back to Amsterdam, it looks the same but it isn’t, who are those people with their fists in the air wanting to deport  us foreigners? Learning Dutch and starting my career in the Corporate World – international companies with small minded people, some were diamonds though. A little bit of plastic surgery here and there, having time to “form my personality”, before this I didn’t have time.

Now:

Still inAmsterdam. Discovered India in the backstreets of Delhi, made me a more caring person, I always was though. Changed my career direction, became aware that your ancestors are important, even if you never met them. Happy.

  1. hello, dont have your name
dont know how I got to your page ! I was trying to sign up for the 10 free credits to explore the 1911 Scottish Census . Anyway, I loved reading your post and felt very much that you savour life and keep the delighted details very close. Good on you.
I have also had a wonderful 3 year interlude living in the Netherlands (Den Haag) but am mostly a sad expat living in Australia.
Am awaiting the birth of my first grandchild..only a few days to go and its like being in the lull before the storm. Hushed and excited.
So greetings my fellow scot, keep spreading the love.
    I will remember you.
