The apartment on East 48th Street was really a townhouse. On the top floor was a skylight leading onto a roof garden. The building photographed outside of the skylight is on the corner on East 48th and Second Avenue. I don’t know the name of the building but there is a great Japanese restaurant on the ground floor where I would sometimes eat. Midtown was great, going every evening to eat at Mayfair, every morning breakfast at Oscars in the Waldorf Astoria and sunbathing on the roof garden in the summers.

I took this photo of New York when I had emigrated to the United States. The photo was taken from on a ship in the harbour, I thought of my uncle G. who had crossed the Atlantic so many times. New York is one of my favorite places, it has shaped my life in many ways and it is somewhere that I will never forget. I remember coming from the airport the first time, crossing Queensborough Bridge.
I first lived in Midtown on East 48th Street before moving to Greenwich Village. I loved the Lower East Side the most, the grunge, the street, the down-and-outs.
